Join GACVB in February in historic Marietta where it's hip to be square! The conference takes place at the Hilton Atlanta-Marietta Hotel & Conference Center. Registration is only $295 for GACVB members and $355 for non-members. The meeting begins at 11:30am on Monday, February 8, 2010 and adjourns at noon on Wednesday, February 10, 2010.

The 2010 Winter Meeting marks year two of GACVB's new Leadership Excellence Certification program, which is a three tier process. Tier two is Organizational Excellence - eight hours of required courses are included in the meeting agenda. Tier three (2011) is Strategic Excellence. Tier one, Supervising Excellence, will be offered again in 2012. Upon completing all three tiers, online evaluations, and a Personal Leadership Development Plan, Leadership Excellence Certification will be awarded.

Courses that lead to certification will be offered annually at the GACVB Winter Meeting. You may begin your certification process with either tier one, two or three, they do not have to be in that order. And, your attendance at this meeting does not require that you commit to the three tier certification process.

Those who complete certification will be recognized at the Governor's Conference as having attained Leadership Excellence Certification (LEC) and presented with a CCLD certificate, appropriate for display.

LEC Course Descriptions:
Enhancing Leadership Effectiveness

Using MBTI (Myers-Briggs Type Indicator) Assessment, you will learn more about yourself and the people you lead and interact. The ability to develop and lead a creative workforce requires self-awareness and the interpersonal skills to maintain healthy relationships. You will have the opportunity to compare your perception of yourself as a leader with the self-scoring assessment!

Conflict Management
Conflict is a part of the workplace and is dealt with almost every day. There are some basic principles that, when applied, helps resolve and reconcile conflict. They are: Clarify the facts, the players, and the positions. Explore the most workable options. Move to the most positive outcome. Address the legitimate needs and concerns. The successful resolution of conflict empowers the entire team!

How to Lead a High Performing Team
What is the difference in a great team and a group of people? Effective leaders can articulate and identify the difference. This session addresses the qualities that all great teams possess and will also look at five traits that will make a team dysfunctional. The role of the leader is critical in determining whether at team is functioning at its peak or becoming dysfunctional!

Leading Change
A leader can either lead change or spend her/his energies trying to catch-up to it. The 8 Step Model enables the leader to take charge and implement change. Leaders must be skilled change-agents in this time of constant crisis.

In addition to the coursework required for the certification program, the Winter Meeting agenda includes a GDEcD Coop Workshop presented by Deputy Commissioner Kevin Langston, a Legislative Update presented by Joy Walstrum of the Tourism Development Alliance of Georgia, and Shirtsleeve Sessions for CEOs, Marketing/PR, and Social Media.

We are also pleased to host Dr. Steve Morse, Director and Economist, from the Tourism Research Institute of the University of Tennessee. Dr. Morse’s presentation is Protecting Your Local Tourism Organization’s Budget in a Down Economy: New Strategies for Showing the Economic Importance of Tourism to Local Officials.

With the current economic slowdown, tourism officials report that the slowing economy has decreased local tourism tax revenues and in some areas resulted in cuts to tourism marketing budgets of many convention and visitor bureaus. Now more than ever, to protect tourism budgets and avoid tourism budget cuts, travel and tourism officials need to effectively communicate to local governments and community stakeholders the economic importance of tourist spending to their local Georgia area economies.

Those of us in the tourism and hospitality industry realize that travel and tourism is a significant economic development tool and generates jobs, and additional tax revenues for local Georgia county economies. But, do your local government officials, business and community leaders and citizens look at tourism the same way? Often not – and usually it’s because they don’t understand the tremendous impact tourism has on your local economy.

In addition to an easy step-by-step method of how to develop a one-page “Tourism Economic Fact Sheet” for each of Georgia’s 159 counties, you will learn how to easily calculate your county’s specific “Tourism Tax Relief” amount that tourism saves each household in your county.

You will learn about successful communication strategies on how to use this information to earn your tourism organization’s rightful place at your local economic development table. Once local tourism officials sharpen their skills in telling their tourism success stories in terms of number of jobs and taxes generated by tourism, tourism will earn a rightful and significant place among local economic development officials, and those holding decisions on your tourism budget.

Most tourism professionals focus their resources and efforts on marketing and promotion, and sometimes we leave little time for telling our tourism success story and the enormous impact tourism has on the local economy. In this seminar you will sharpen your skills and strategies in telling the positive economic impact story of tourism in your local area and increase the chances of preserving and even increasing your tourism promotion budgets during these slow economic times.
